Is Mohbad Dead? The Truth Behind the Afrobeats Star’s Tragic Demise

 ## Who was Mohbad? Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, was a Nigerian rapper and singer who rose to fame with his hit songs such as "Koma Jensun", "Ponmo Sweet", and "Feel Good". He was signed to Naira Marley's Marlian Music label and was regarded as one of the most promising talents in the Afrobeats scene. He had a loyal fan base who called themselves "Marlians" and admired his unique style and charisma. ## How did Mohbad die? On 12 September 2023, Mohbad died at the age of 27 after being treated for an infection by an unlicensed nurse, who was later arrested. Police subsequently announced they would investigate the circumstances of the singer's death after his body was exhumed on 21 September 2023[^1^][1]. According to the police interim report, the management of an injury inflicted on late Mohbad during a fight with his childhood friend, Prime Boy, resulted in his death. The report named an Auxiliary Nurse, Miss Fisayo Ogedengbe as the Prime suspect in Mohbad’s death after she admitted during interrogation that the injection she gave him triggered a reaction that led to his eventual death[^2^][2]. Police investigation also established that the deceased was assaulted and bullied by the duo of Abdulazeez Fashola (a.k.a Naira Marley) and Samson Balogun Eletu popularly called Sam Larry[^2^][2]. These were disclosed by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, CP Idowu Owohunwa, at a press briefing on the outcome of the interim report on Mohbad’s death, held at the command’s headquarters, Ikeja[^2^][2]. ## What was the reaction of the fans and the public? Hundreds of fans of Mohbad, who died last week, have taken to the streets of Ibadan and Asaba in Nigeria, calling for justice. It follows similar protests and an outpouring of grief in other cities across southern Nigeria this week[^3^][3]. The hashtag #Justice4Mohbad has been trending on social media platforms, with many demanding accountability and transparency from the authorities and the music industry. Some celebrities and fellow artists have also expressed their condolences and shock over Mohbad's death. Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage, Olamide, and others have posted tributes and messages of support for Mohbad's family and fans. However, some have also faced criticism for their silence or alleged involvement in the case, such as Naira Marley, Sam Larry, and Prime Boy. ## What is the current status of the case? The investigation by detectives of the Special Investigation Team set up five days after Mohbad’s death, took them two weeks to complete. Aside the auxiliary nurse, 25 other persons were interviewed in the course of the investigation[^2^][2]. However, among the 26 persons interrogated , five suspects had so far been been identified, arrested, detained and interrogated on their alleged roles in the sequence of events that led to the death of the singer[^2^][2]. The autopsy was carried out and completed on 21 September 2023[^1^][1]. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin in an interview with Punch newspapers, confirmed Mohbad's body is currently in the mortuary[^4^][4]. He also issued a stern warning which reads; “The investigation will not be turned into a media trial”[^5^][5]. On 28 September 2023, Lagos State Police Command confirmed Sam Larry is now in custody and currently assisting with the ongoing investigation. The state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu invited Department of State Services (DSS) to join the ongoing investigation. The case is still developing and more updates are expected to be released soon.
